The GSP Purdue Days

Many of the GSPs were EE students at Purdue University. If you live and study together, you're bound to do a few other crazy things together. Here is a small sampling of life in the spring and summer of 1981. These photos are from the collection of Paul Carlile but were taken by Malcolm Slaney.

Monty Python

We spent a lot of time in the Electrical Engineering Building. Its a good thing that the Purdue Film Society used EE129 to show their films. During the spring of 1981 they showed Monty Python's "Holy Grail" and we just had to dress up. The coconuts came from the supermarket, the robes were borrowed from the Good Guys of HKN. We all sang after buying our tickets and walking into the lecture hall.

Indianapolis 500

It is Indiana. The only really big event in the state (other than David Letterman) is the Indianapolis 500. In 1981 the 500 had a special attraction since many GSPs helped with the scoring for the Purdue Grand Prix.

It's a pretty crazy day. Our Indianapolis friends (was it mainly Don?) organized an early morning trip to the infield, arriving before 5AM when the canon is fired indicating the gates are open. We all run to the fourth turn and then we just wait and socialize and goof off until the race if over. It's definitely more fun in a group. We were all broke students and we couldn't afford good beer. We still had a good time. This 500 was especially famous because of two guys in front of us. Wolfie was too drunk to stay awake. His friend kept trying to wake him up, saying "Nobody Sleeps!" He even tried throwing wet chicken from his ice cooler at Wolfie but nothing worked.

Carlile Canoe Trip

The parts of our bodies that didn't get sunburned at the 500 got attacked the next day on the annual Carlile canoe trip. Starting in Crawfordsville, we floated down Sugar Creek to Shades State Park with the Carlile family, and all their friends.

After the canoeing we all hung around and relaxed. ????Wasn't this the first day that Tony Andrews and Michele Roney met???? Sorry, no pictures from Day 1 of the six week countdown to engagement!!!
